Excluding China, EAF Steel Mills Account for 51% of Global Crude Steel Production in 2024

Key Production Data for 2024:
China accounted for 53.3% of the world's total crude steel production.
In 2024, China produced approximately 103 million metric tons (mmt) of steel via EAF mills and 903 mmt via BOF mills.

Globally, EAF mills contributed 29% (548 mmt) of crude steel production, while BOF mills dominated with 70% (1.33 billion tons).

When excluding China, the share of EAF production increased from 29% to 51%, while BOF mills dropped from 70% to 48%.

In other words, without China's output, EAFs surpass BOFs in global crude steel production share.

Ex-China production breakdown:

  • EAF output: 445 million tons (51%)

  • BOF output: 424 million tons (48%)

China is the decisive factor tilting global steel production toward BOF dominance.
